About the Exhibition
The airline uniform occupies a unique role in the history women’s wear. Fashion In Flight: A History of Airline Uniform Design includes seventy ensembles from over two-dozen airlines spanning eighty-five years. The creations of more than thirty renowned fashion houses and designers are presented in the exhibition. Fashion In Flight traces uniform design from the pre-war nurse and utility chic eras, through the period of European couturiers and Hollywood costumers producing extraordinary collections for airline clientele during the 1950s, ‘60s, and ‘70s, to the nostalgia and power-dressing trends of the 1980s and ‘90s, and up to today’s select designers who are keeping airlines at fashion’s forefront. Included are uniforms by Adolfo, Cristóbal Balenciaga, Pierre Balmain, Bill Blass, Pierre Cardin, Oleg Cassini, André Courrèges, Christian Dior, Howard Greer, Halston, Edith Head, Stan Herman, Hermès, Macario Jiménez, Christian Lacroix, Papou Lahoud, Ralph Lauren, Don Loper, Jean Louis, Hanae Mori, Jean Patou, Emilio Pucci, Ben Reig, Yves Saint Laurent, Frank Smith, Valentino, and Vivienne Westwood.
