National Mentoring Month at SFO

January is National Mentoring Month, a campaign that seeks to spotlight the need for mentors, while celebrating the positive effects mentoring can have on employees’ lives.  The Airport is a strong supporter of mentor/intern programs, and at SFO there are more than 60 dedicated mentors providing guidance for over 100 interns annually.

For SFO Interns, the mentorship they receive can change the course of their career path or educational journey. Nationally, youth with a mentor are 52% less likely to skip a day of school, and 55% more likely to be enrolled in college*.  SFO’s College Track Internship is specifically designed to pair low-income college students with a mentor at SFO so that they can earn money for their education while also gaining valuable career exposure.  In the past 11 years, 80 young people have graduated our College Track internship with tremendous results, including transferring to four year universities, being the first in their family to graduate college, working for local government, and continuing careers in aviation.

In addition to College Track, SFO has many other internship opportunities available, that include:

  • High School Students:  S.F. Project Pull, SFO Summer High School Interns Program, Tech 21 Trades Exposure Internship, and YouthWorks.
  • College Students (and youth ages 18-27):  Summer College Internship Program, Student Engineering/Architectural/Planner Trainee Program, Project Assist, Project Assist, Career Connect College Track, Employment Track, and Custodial Track.
  • Post Graduates:  SFO Fellowship Program and SF Fellows, a partnership with the Department of Human Resources.

If you are interested in mentoring a young person through SFO’s internship programs, please contact the Employment and Community Partnerships staff at sfointernships@flysfo.com.
