SFO Extends Nighttime Closures on AirTrain Light Rail System

Bus service will operate during overnight closures to build new station and make system upgrades

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has announced an updated schedule of nighttime closures to the AirTrain light rail system to create a new station for the on-airport hotel that is scheduled to open in Summer 2019, and make upgrades to the overall system.

Overnight closures begin May 14, 2018, from 8:00pm to 5:00am. Originally slated to conclude in June, SFO now plans to extend the nighttime closures to August 15, 2018, to allow for an upgraded "line-of-sight" communications system to be installed, which promises improved reliability.

During the nighttime closures, SFO will operate bus services between all terminals and Rental Car Center. Business hours, frequency, and locations are as follows:

  • 8:00pm to 1:00am – busses will operate every five (5) minutes
  • 1:00am to 3:00am – busses will operate every fifteen (15) minutes
  • 3:00am to 5:00am – busses will operate every five (5) minutes

Busses will pick-up and drop-off customers on the departure level, center island of all terminals.  Passengers are encouraged to allow extra time during the closures.
