New Museum Exhibition Celebrates San Francisco’s Newest Sister City

Kieler Woche Posters 1948-2018

In September 2017, San Francisco and the city of Kiel, located in northern Germany, became official sister cities.  In partnership with the San Francisco - Kiel Sister City Committee, SFO Museum is proud to present an exhibition of event posters celebrating Kiel’s annual regatta.

Every year since 1948, a poster has been produced for promotional use during Kiel Week (German: Kieler Woche); an annual sailing event that takes place in the city and surrounding waters.  Each year, a highly regarded jury invites selected artists and graphic designers from Germany and abroad to compete for the festival’s poster design.  Brought together, these posters offer a reflection on the development of graphic design as an art form since the late 1940s.  Forty-four of the festival’s seventy-one winning designs are exhibited at six sites within the San Francisco International Airport from June through August, 2018.

Known as the Sailing City, Kiel is Germany’s gateway to the Baltic Sea and the capital of its northernmost state, Schleswig-Holstein.  It is the largest cruise ship port in Germany and is well known for its vibrant student scene and relaxed lifestyle.  Kieler Woche is the largest sailing event in the world, typically beginning during the third week of June and is one of the largest “Volksfeste” in Germany.

Kieler Woche Posters are on exhibition at pre- and post-security sites located in Terminals 1 and 3 of the San Francisco International Airport.  This exhibition is on view from June through August, 2018.
