Volunteer for the Annual Emergency Exercise on September 19, 2018

The Emergency Management team is conducting the Airport’s Annual Emergency Exercise on Wednesday, September 19, 2018 from 10am to 3pm. This year the scenario focuses on a water-based aircraft response.  Many of the response operations will occur at the Marine Emergency Response Facility (MERF), the water surrounding the Airport, and off-site at Oyster Point Harbor.  Volunteer role players will be transported on water-borne vessels into the Bay and “rescued” by marine assets.  This complex operation will require flexibility and support of all volunteers.

We are soliciting volunteers to act as controllers, support staff, role play victims, and passenger evacuees.  If you are able and willing, during the hours of 7:30am to 3pm, your support would be greatly appreciated.  Recognizing this exercise will occur during core working hours, coordination with your manager is required.  Release of volunteers for this exercise depends on the operational needs of every unit.  I am relying on managers to be as flexible as possible without impacting essential services when considering requests to volunteer.

Although the exercise is not designed to place volunteers in the water, all volunteer role players must: (1) have no physical restrictions precluding them from being exposed to the elements, climbing in and out of rafts and boats; (2) be over 18 years of age; and (3) be able to swim.  All volunteers will wear life vests while in water-borne vessels.  Additional safety measures may be required by the San Francisco Fire Department.  Support staff must be over 18 years of age but do not need to meet the other volunteer role player requirements.

To register, or for more information, please email SFO-AEMExercise@flysfo.com no later than close of business on Friday, September 7, 2018.
