SFPD Issues Warning about "Blessing" Scams

Police are urging San Francisco residents, especially older members of the Chinese community, not to fall prey to a “blessing” scam that has robbed elderly victims of large amounts of cash and valuables.  Over the past two weeks, police have investigated two incidents related to the scam, both of which have resulted in substantial financial loss.  Investigators say the first incident happened on November 29th on Schwerin Street in the Visitacion Valley neighborhood, the second incident happened on December 1st in the area of 6th and Clement Streets.

San Francisco police are reminding older members of the Chinese community to be suspicious of strangers who claim to provide relief from a curse, illness, or who organize "purification" ceremonies that require cash and valuable items to be offered as part of the ceremony.  Safety and security is our first priority at SFO; anyone confronted with such a situation or who thinks they are a potential victim is strongly encouraged to contact police at the 24 Hour Tip line at 415-575-4444, or Text a Tip to TIP411 and begin the text message with SFPD.
