Uber X and Lyft to Offer Discounted Rate for Garage Pickups at SFO

Customers who select "Garage Pickup" can save $3 per trip starting March 1st

In an effort to improve roadway traffic flow around the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and offer more affordable transportation options to their customers, effective March 1, 2019, Uber X and Lyft will offer their customers the option to be picked up in the Airport’s Domestic Hourly Garage, at $3 less than the curbside rate. Customers will be able to select “Garage Pickup” through each company’s respective app to be picked up on the top level of the garage, which was reconfigured to accommodate Uber and Lyft shared ride categories in the summer of 2018.

“We’re focused on making SFO easier for travelers to access, and we’ve implemented premium pricing at our curbsides to alleviate traffic congestion around our terminals,” said Airport Director Ivar C. Satero. “We appreciate Uber and Lyft responding to this by offering a cost-effective alternative to travelers who choose to be picked up in our garage. This offers their customers more value, while helping to keep our roadways moving smoothly and efficiently. Travelers can also continue to enjoy certified taxicab service at SFO, conveniently located outside baggage claim on our arrivals level.”

“Lyft has made getting to and from airports easier and more convenient for millions of people across the country,” said David Kunst, General Manager of Northern California. “We appreciate the continued collaboration with San Francisco International Airport on how to best utilize curb space and loading zones and look forward to continued partnership to make sure people are getting to where they are going safely and efficiently.”

“We are excited to collaborate with SFO to offer discounted Uber rides from the garage, while preserving curbside pickups for travelers. This will prioritize convenience and help to reduce terminal congestion,” said Anita Natarajan, Director of Airport Operations, US & Canada.

SFO has been working with Uber and Lyft to improve operations at the terminal curbs. In summer 2018, Uber Pool, Express Pool, and Lyft Shared categories relocated pickups to the Domestic Parking Garage.

SFO also encourages customers to use the alternative pick-up and drop-off locations to avoid traffic congestion getting to the terminals. During peak departure times, electronic signs will direct customers to use the lower level to drop off passengers. Hourly parking garages are free for stays of 30 minutes or less, allowing customers to bypass the terminal curbs completely when dropping off or picking up passengers. This applies to the Domestic Parking Garage and International Garages A and G. Vehicles that enter and exit the garages within 30 minutes will not be charged. Vehicles parked in the garages for longer than 30 minutes will be charged for the full duration of their stay.
