Safety Management System (SMS) and Airport Certification

This office leads the development, implementation, and management of the Airport Safety Management System (SMS).  An SMS is a well-defined, systematic, integrated and proactive safety program.  Safety is not addressed by a single department or as a separate entity, but as an overarching way of business.

SMS includes four components:

  1. Policy
  2. Risk Management
  3. Assurance
  4. Promotion

Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) 139 requires commercial airports to be certified by the FAA.  Airport certification mandates compliance with standards such as airfield conditions, aircraft rescue and firefighting, aircraft fueling, and training.  This office acts as the liaison to the FAA Airport Certification Safety Inspector and coordinates amongst Airport staff and tenant organizations to assure compliance.
