Mechanics Lien Rights

The San Francisco International Airport (Airport) is owned by the City and County of San Francisco (City).  Because the City, as a public agency, owns the Airport, the Airport is not subject to mechanics liens.

Please be advised that if you are doing business at the Airport as a contractor, it does not necessarily mean you are doing business with the City.  For example, if you are engaged as a contractor by a tenant (private party) at the Airport to work on a construction project, it may not be a public work of improvement under the California Civil Code, and therefore rules regarding mechanics liens likely do not apply as to the Airport.

The City strongly recommends that all contractors review the classification and potential lien rights, if any, arising from their proposed contracts at the Airport prior to execution.
