Did you know that all 911 calls made at the Airport go to SFO's Communications Center, where the calls are fielded by Telecommunications Dispatchers? All employees are encouraged to call 911 if they encounter any emergency situations.

Did you know that Eleanor Johns was appointed to the Airport Commission by Mayor Willie L. Brown, Jr. in May 2003? Ms. Johns was appointed to a second term by Mayor Gavin Newsom in 2007 and reappointed in 2011 and 2015 by Mayor Edwin M. Lee. On September 4, 2019, Ms. Johns was appointed to her fifth term by Mayor London N. Breed.

Did you know that, on May 18, 1953, Jacqueline Cochran became the first woman to fly faster than the speed of sound and, at the time of her death in 1980, she held more speed, altitude, and distance records than any other male or female pilot in aviation history?

Did you know that Janet Waterford Bragg was a pioneering female African American pilot whose leadership in black pilot organizations in the 1930s paved the way for other aviators?  In 1942 she was the first African American woman to hold a commercial pilot license and she is a 2022 inductee to the Georgia Aviation Hall of Fame.

Did you know that Suzanne Asbury-Oliver is the only active female professional skywriter in the world? Asbury-Oliver aviated for PepsiCo and now has her own skywriting company, Oliver’s Flying Circus. She estimates that in a typical year, she writes 500 sky messages in over 150 locations nationwide.

Did you know that Harriet Quimby was the first woman in the United States to receive a pilot certificate, issued to her by the Aero Club of America in 1911? In 1912 she also became the first woman to fly across the English Channel.
