Who Knew? Archive

Did you know that a total of 910 placards have been affixed to the interior of every public restroom stall at SFO to help combat human trafficking?  The Airport worked with the San Francisco Mayor’s Office, the San Francisco Department on the Status of Women, and various Bay Area human trafficking survivor advocacy groups to develop the appropriate message and visuals for the placards. Messaging on the placards has also been translated into Spanish, Chinese, and Tagalog.

Did you know that the Department of Public Health’s Environmental Health Inspectors incorporate anti-human trafficking training into their inspection process? Staff are trained to recognize the Red Flags, or most common signs of human trafficking, and make referrals to the San Francisco Police Department for investigation within 24 hours whenever signs of potential human trafficking are observed in health-permitted businesses.

Did you know that SFO has managed two major runway projects over the past 3 years?  In 2021, SFO took advantage of reduced flight activity due to the COVID-19 pandemic to repave and upgrade Runway 28R.  In March 2023, SFO closed Runway 1L for 8 weeks to repave the surface layer and upgrade lighting and taxiways.

Did you know that the West of Bayshore property is approximately 180 acres of undeveloped wetland and upland habitat that contains major utility corridors, substations, and water pump stations? It is also a biologically sensitive habitat for endangered species.

Did you know that SFO is embarking on the development of a Shoreline Protection Program (SPP or “Program”) to protect the Airport’s assets and operations from flooding from a 100-year storm surge and future sea level rise due to climate change?

Did you know that the Airport Development Plan (ADP) provides a framework for the long-range vision of SFO Tomorrow? From passenger terminals, ground access and parking, support facilities, and utility improvements to accommodate long-term demand, the ADP hosts a variety of projects to align with SFO’s future development goals and objectives.

Did you know that SFO's Clean Vehicle Policy extends to airfield vehicles? Currently, some 700 pure electric vehicles are in service, amounting to 30% of all tenant-operated airfield vehicles.

Did you know that, in the summer of 2014, SFO constructed special zones at the end of the runway to safely capture an aircraft’s landing gear should it overshoot the airstrip? All U.S. airports were mandated by Congress to complete this work.

Did you know that the utility infrastructure at the Airport includes pipelines, pump stations, high-capacity wiring conduits, distribution centers, the Mel Leong Water Treatment Plant, and a Central Utility Plant (CUP) serving the terminal complex?

Did you know that the standard runway flow configuration at SFO, known as the West Plan, is used approximately 83 percent of the time and is used by the airlines in developing flight schedules? In this configuration, Runways 28L and 28R are the primary arrival runways and Runways 1L and 1R are the primary departure runways. However, long-haul heavy aircraft depart primarily from Runways 28L and 28R, which are the longest runways at the Airport. The West Plan is referred to as the “28-1” runway configuration.
