Message to Airport Commission Employees on Outcome of Derek Chauvin Trial

Dear Team:

As an SFO community, we applaud the outcome of this case, and hope that this will be a watershed moment in creating a fundamental shift at the intersection of law enforcement and race. Today’s verdict is a step forward in the fight for police accountability.  We must continue to appeal for a fundamental change in law enforcement hiring, policies, and tactics. We know that our City shares this view, but we must embrace this as a nation. The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which has passed in the U.S. House of Representatives, must also pass in the Senate.

The outcome of this trial cannot be treated as the end of this battle, and as citizens we must make our voices heard in ways that produce meaningful action and lasting change. We must continue persevering towards justice and that means renewing our fight against systemic racism, oppression, hatred and violence each and every day. While the fight is by no means over, today’s verdict does mean there will be accountability and hopefully some measure of healing for the Floyd family and community.
