Reminder: City’s Policy on Family and Romantic Relationships at Work
At SFO, maintaining appropriate boundaries between personal, family, and professional relationships is essential to fostering a fair, equitable, and trustworthy work environment. When employees uphold these boundaries, it helps ensure a workplace that:
- Promotes fairness, equity, and safety
- Supports high employee morale
- Strengthens trust in the City and County of San Francisco’s (City) merit-based employment system
As one of the largest employers in the region, it's not uncommon for family members or romantic partners to work within the City. While this is generally acceptable, concerns can arise if one individual is involved in employment decisions that affect the other, which can lead to potential issues of nepotism, favoritism, or conflicts of interest.
To prevent such concerns, employees may not make, participate in making, or influence any employment decision involving a family member or romantic partner.
To support transparency and uphold the City’s commitment to a fair workplace, employees are strongly encouraged to proactively disclose any current or potential personal relationships that may intersect with their professional roles. Disclosure is not punitive – it’s a tool to help protect both you and the integrity of our work.
