Requirements for Additional City Paid Sick Leave (“COV”)

Effective October 31, 2020, employees who are unable to work or telecommute may use Additional City Paid Sick Leave (“COV”) hours for the following qualifying reasons:

  1. Employee is subject to a Federal, State, or local quarantine or isolation order related to COVID-19;
  2. Employee has been advised by a health care provider to self-quarantine related to COVID-19;
  3. Employee is experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 and seeking a medical diagnosis;
  4. Employee is caring for an individual who is subject to a Federal, State, or local quarantine or isolation order, or who has been advised by a health care provider to self-quarantine related to COVID-19;
  5. Employee is caring for a son or daughter if the school or place of care of the son or daughter has been closed due to COVID-19 precautions; or
  6. Employee is experiencing any other substantially similar condition specified by the Secretary of U.S. Health and Human Services in consultation with the Secretary of the Treasury and the Secretary of Labor (to date there are no additional conditions specified).

These qualifying reasons are taken from the federal Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) and are intended to align the City’s COV benefit with this federal law and the new state Labor Code Section 248 – 248.1.  Employees must use any new or remaining COV allocation by June 30, 2021. Any unused portion of this benefit will expire and be forfeited at that time.

Employees are required to complete the COVID-19 Sick Leave Form and provide quarantine/isolation order or school closure notice in order to use their COV hours.  Please submit completed forms and documentation to SFO.HumanResourcesOps@flysfo.com.
