SFO Ambassadors Enhance Safety & Security at the Airport

In October of 2022, the Airport launched the SFO Ambassadors, a new program to enhance safety and security for staff, tenants, and employees. A group of retired San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) officers who work at SFO during the main travel hours, the Ambassadors walk the pre-security areas of the terminals, interacting with tenants, passengers, and persons experiencing homelessness.

As former police officers, SFO Ambassadors provide well-trained eyes and ears that help identify and alleviate a range of safety issues, including homelessness. SFO is experiencing the effects of this growing regional problem as persons experiencing homelessness come to the Airport seeking shelter. The SFO Ambassadors identify and engage with these individuals and offer them access to services provided by the County of San Mateo. Their deep knowledge of the homeless population at SFO enhances safety and security for travelers and workers alike.

The Ambassadors are a welcoming presence in the terminals and provide an additional layer of safety for our tenants, employees, and guests. They are familiar with the staff at the shops, restaurants and services that are available pre-security, especially in the International Terminal and the baggage claim areas. Because of their background in law enforcement, they have helped to quickly spot issues – like theft or medical emergencies – and have alerted law enforcement and medical personnel.

SFO is encouraged by the early success of this program and are looking at ways to enhance its effectiveness. There are currently two dozen Ambassadors, and the Airport hopes to double that over the next several months. SFO is also working with its partners in San Mateo County and BART to increase accessibility to services.

A big thank you to SFPD Captain Jason Sawyer who launched and manages the program as well as his team of Ambassadors. SFO appreciates their dedication and commitment to keeping the Airport safe.
