SFO Celebrates Black History Month

BHM 2023

Each year in February, Americans observe National Black History Month to pay tribute to the generations of Black Americans who struggled with adversity to achieve full citizenship in American society. SFO is proud to celebrate Black History Month, with a special focus on recognizing the achievements and contributions of Black Americans in the broader field of aviation and at our airport—from groundbreaking aviators and artists to our own team members and business partners. Please be sure to follow our Facebook and Instagram (@flySFO) this month to learn about these inspiring people.

Black History Month is also a time to reflect and acknowledge that the centuries-old fight for equality continues to this day for Black Americans. SFO is committed to ensuring equity and justice by removing barriers to access and building a workforce that is more representative of the region we serve.

Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) Employee Resource Group

In 2020, SFO employees launched BIPOC@SFO, an employee resource group to support Black, Indigenous and People of Color at SFO. BIPOC@SFO offers a space for employees who share interests and common life experiences to build community and a sense of belonging in the workplace. BIPOC@SFO is one of seven employee-led groups that help foster an inclusive workplace, promote equity and provide an important resource for SFO leadership.

Happening Now

Throughout the month of February, SFO Museum's Video Arts program is screening a series of films celebrating Black American artists. Located pre-security on the departures level of International Terminal, travelers and the public alike are welcome to view these films. From award-winning jazz composer Kris Bowers discovering where he belongs with his grandfather’s stories to a visual poem celebrating the diversity of the Black diaspora in the San Francisco Bay Area, and from the story of The New Yorker magazine’s first Black, female cartoonist Liz Montague to centering oneself through braiding as depicted by dance artist Michaela DePrince, SFO Museum’s Video Arts program is honored to share these stories told through the lens of Black Americans.
