Wetlands provide multiple functions including playing an essential role in adaptation and resilience; providing regulation of water flow; controlling flood and erosion; filtering pollutants and fertilizers; transforming nutrients; recharging groundwater; and providing a habitat for numerous plants and animals.

Did you know that aircraft altitude is generally determined by the distance from the landing or takeoff runway? The closer the aircraft is to the runway, the lower the altitude. Arriving aircraft tend to descend at a fixed angle of 3 degrees, while the angle of ascent for departing aircraft is a function of aircraft type, weight, air temperature and wind speed.

Did you know that There are two helicopter operators based at the San Francisco International Airport: The United States Coast Guard and San Francisco Helicopters? The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulates and is the ultimate control of all aircraft movement through regulations established in the Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR); specifically, helicopter altitudes are regulated through FAR Part 91.

Did you know that San Francisco International Airport’s (SFO) Sound Waves: A High School Education Curriculum is one of the many ways that SFO supports its mission of providing an exceptional airport in service to our communities? This five-day lesson sequence meets the requirements of the California Department of Education Content Standards NGSS HS PS 4.1 and gives Bay Area students an opportunity to apply scientific principles about sound to real-world situations at the airport by using mathematical representations to support a claim regarding relationships among the frequency, wavelength and speed of waves traveling in various media.

Did you know that the new Terminal 1 will be named after former SF Supervisor and civil rights leader Harvey Milk?  Harvey Milk Terminal 1 will include a central inglenook area, which will feature a photo exhibit honoring the civil rights leader and his impact on LGBTQ rights in San Francisco and around the world.
