Beginning June 1, 2020, BART will only sell plastic reloadable Clipper Cards at the SFO station. All the current ticket vending machines at the station will be converted to sell only Clipper Cards. Clipper Cards offer cheaper per-ride fares and can be used on most regional transit providers including most ferries, cable cars, Muni, Caltrain and local bus systems such as SamTrans. BART and the Airport hope that by selling only Clipper Cards, visitors to our area will enjoy a more seamless experience on all regional transit services, and will have a less frustrating experience when trying to return to the Airport from downtown BART stations that have already converted to Clipper-only.
Some SFO Information Booths will also sell reloadable Clipper Cards, including several booths near Baggage Claim. Large banners will advertise the availability of cards at these locations, with the intention that customers could purchase cards while waiting for their luggage. This is being done to ensure that lines do not form at the in-station vending machines.
The faregates will still accept paper tickets for guests who already have them. Tenants who purchase BART tickets in bulk will continue to receive paper tickets, these tickets will work in the faregates. The BART Employee Discount card will continue to work in the same way it does today.
Airport Tenants and Staff should take note of these changes and help communicate the changes to our guests, particularly those arriving from outside the region.
