Since the beginning of the COVID pandemic, the Airport has made the health and well-being of our employees and the public our top priority. We continue to monitor public health guidance from the San Francisco Department of Public Health, San Francisco Department of Human Resources, California Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to make decisions, as we have done throughout the pandemic.
The Airport is updating previous guidance about face coverings, as well as providing reminders on workplace safety as follows below:
1. Face Covering
The CDC mask mandate for public transportation is no longer in effect and will not be enforced by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in airport facilities, following a judicial decision in the federal court system. Effective immediately, masks are no longer required, and employees may remove their masks in the workplace. The CDC continues to recommend that people wear masks in indoor public transportation settings. All members of the traveling public and employees have the option to continue wearing a mask while at SFO.
I ask all employees to respect each individual’s decision regarding mask usage as guidelines transition to an individual risk-focused approach. The San Francisco Health Order recommends that individuals wear a well-fitted mask in indoor public settings based on three factors: 1) your own risk tolerance, 2) overall level of community transmission, and 3) whether you or someone with whom you live is at risk of severe disease.
Additionally, Cal/OSHA regulations require masking after a close contact or after testing positive for COVID-19. For more information, visit Cal/OSHA requirements.
2. Workplace Safety
The Airport will continue to maintain certain safety measures within our City facilities. Below is a summary of the key safety protocols:
- If you are sick, stay home. Employees can use sick leave or other time-off balances, as well as unused COVID-19 Paid Sick Leave through September 30, 2022.
- All employees are still required to assess their own health each day, especially before coming to work onsite. Employees should continue to watch for COVID-19 symptoms such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, or other symptoms. If they have COVID-19 symptoms, exposure, or a positive test result, before reporting to work onsite, employees should consult with SFO Human Resources for the appropriate return to work protocol.
- Employees are strongly encouraged to practice physical distancing and avoid congregating in shared spaces or sharing food.
- Meetings may be held virtually or in-person, depending on the operational needs.
- Visitors are also required to assess their health and should not enter Commission offices or worksites if exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms.
We must continue working together to ensure the health and safety of our colleagues, our families, and community.
