Launched in 2015, the MVP Committee’s annual “Hooked on Helping” Program combines people’s passion for knitting and crocheting with their desire to help people in need.
This year, we are pleased to announce two opportunities:
- Throw Blankets - create throw blankets for American immigrant families or individuals who are refugees, asylees, victims of human trafficking, or survivors of torture. Welcome Blanket(1) and the International Rescue Committee(2) will give these blankets to their clients along with personal notes from immigrants. Attached are instructions and photos of blankets.
- Baby Items - knit or crochet hats, sweaters, blankets, or layette items for newborn to children up to five years old. These items will be donated to Homeless Prenatal Program(3) for baby showers for expectant moms. Please use soft yarn as items may be worn against sensitive skin.
Employees can also participate by making a monetary contribution or donating supplies including yarn, knitting needles, and crochet hooks.
The MVP Committee will host a craft-along lunch and learn event which will show you how to knit, crochet, sew, and make artsy notecards.
Items will be collected on November 30, 2021 and distributed during the holidays.
If you have questions, would like a supply needs list, or want to know where to drop off your donation, please email sfomvp@flysfo.com or call Maria Iyog O’Malley at (650) 821-2824,
Janelle Dung-Sapantay at (650) 821-2030 or Andrea Guzman at (650) 821-7716.
(1) The Welcome Blanket Project aims to connect people who are already living in the United States with our country’s newest immigrants through stories and handmade blankets to provide them both symbolic and literal comfort and warmth
(2) The International Rescue Committee responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover and gain control of their future.
(3) Founded in San Francisco in 1989, Homeless Prenatal Program (HPP) empowers low-income and homeless families, particularly mothers motivated by pregnancy and parenthood to find strength and confidence to transform their lives. HPP promotes healthy living toward the following: healthy babies, safe and nurturing environments, and economically stable families.
