Simulated fire event tests emergency response, coordination between agencies
SFO completed its annual emergency exercise on September 29th, simulating a fire affecting critical infrastructure to test emergency procedures for communication, incident command, and coordination between multiple agencies. Although federal regulations require U.S. airports to conduct such a drill once every three years, SFO conducts this full-scale emergency drill annually to ensure the highest level of readiness.
“The pandemic has triggered a host of changes at SFO, but one constant throughout is our dedication to emergency preparedness,” said Airport Director Ivar C. Satero. “We view this as a training cycle that never ends, culminating in this annual emergency exercise. I appreciate the participation of so many members of our Airport community to ensure we are always ready to respond to any incident.”
The exercise also demonstrated the SFO Mobile Command Post, a purpose-built vehicle that gives incident commanders full situational awareness, including coordinated communication regardless of location on Airport grounds.
